SIMONE FONFREIDE (1910-2008)

  • Simone FONFREIDE (1910-2008) was the beloved patron artist of Auvergne, France.
  • Born in 1910 at Vic-sur-Cère, she was the daughter of renowned French artist Victor Fonfreide.
  • She came from a long line of famous working artists on both sides of her family.
  • She studied in Paris at l'ecole de Fernand Léger.
  • Here, she focused primarily on the rich interplay of colors, and developed her primitive style.
  • Her style emphasizes painterly qualities and strong color over representational and realistic values.
  • A painting is painterly when there are visible brushstrokes, the result of applying paint in a less than completely controlled manner,
  • generally without either closely following carefully drawn lines or by drawing in the lines only after first applying the paint.
  • She developed a uniquely original, impulsive and consummate ability to communicate moods and shapes,
  • by dynamically deploying color rather than three-dimensional traditional realism and form.
  • Her use of color is legendary.
  • She had an extraordinary, truly exceptional command of color comparable in skill, complexity, self-expression and perfection to the music of Mozart, Chopin, and Beethoven.
  • Her work was strongly influenced by the Fauvists.
  • Her work is characterised by seemingly wild brush work and strident colours, while the subject matter retains a high degree of deliberate over-simplification and abstraction.

  • Between 1935 and 1955, she produced still life paintings, landscapes, portraits, genre scenes.
  • She also completed a commission with the Cantal church for a mural and extensive interior decoration.
  • She toured Tuscany in Italy, producing an entire series of works based upon classic Italian icons.
  • She visited Madrid in Spain, Morocco, and travelled extensively all over France and Germany.
  • Auvergne remained her primary inspiration source, and it is Auvergne which thrives in the majority of her pieces.
  • She produced work in many mediums including but not limited to oil, watercolor, wash, gouache.

  • In 1960, she also began to work in pottery, and to produce sculpture in both wood and stone, ink, enamel, and to work with terra cotta enamelware.
  • During this period, she accepted numerous commissions for works of grand mural size and extensive composition.
  • She produced on commission the crosses, creches, and religious ornaments that adorn Auvergne's churches.
  • Using a traditional French art form known as 'santons', she produced a line of Auvergne miniature sculptures representing the various working trades of Auvergne,
  • depicting miniature people working at their ancient traditional crafts, including weaving, herding, brick making and candle making.

  • Simone Fonfreide passed away in 2008 at the age of 98 years.
