  • Original full color publicity decalcomania decal.
  • Printed in color directly onto translucent transfer decal paper.
  • When wet with water, the removable paper backing separates from the transfer.
  • Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) created this image for LE NIL cigarette papers manufactured by Joseph Bardon and Sons, Paris, France.
  • Signed in the plate at the bottom center, as Leonetto Cappiello.
  • The legend along the bottom reads: S.I.P PARIS ORIGINALE CAPPIELLO
  • The French text reads: JE NE FUME QUE LE NIL .. PAPIERS A CIGARETTES .. JOSEPH BARDON & FILS
  • COUNTRY of Origin: France.

  • This measures overall approximately 33 cm x 18.5 cm // 13 inches x 7.25 inches.

 

WHAT IS A DECALCOMANIA?

  • A decalcomania is a mirror image reverse printed transferable decal.
  • The image is printed in reverse, so that it will appear right side up when transferred to another surface.
  • A decal is printed directly onto translucent transfer decal paper.
  • The transparent transfer paper is attached to a removable paper backing from which it separates upon contact with water.
  • When the decal is wet with water, the translucent printed image separates from the paper backing and you can transfer it to any surface where you want to apply it.
  • This transferable image is printed in reverse, so that when you transfer it, it will be right side up.
  • The photos below include an image of how this will look when it is right side up, after being transferred.

CONDITION:

  • By " antique " we mean over 100 years of age.
  • By " vintage " we mean between 50 and 100 years of age.
  • This item is made of matter and it is OLD; this means it is NOT NEW.
  • This is not a recent reproduction. It is not a recent copy. It is not a fake.

There are signs of age or usage including but not limited to:

  • The transfer decalcomania has overall surface wear.
  • The transfer decalcomania has one corner torn, side tears, wrinkles, and is bent all along one side edge.
  • There is overall oxidation.
  • There are surface scratches.
  • The removable paper backing shows considerable wear, mostly around the perimeter and edges.
  • The transfer decalcomania itself is unaffected by the wear to the removable paper backing's edges.
  • The removable paper backing has obvious small tears to the one corner.
  • The removable paper backing has small tears at the corners.
  • The removable paper backing has wear to all the outer edges around the perimeter.
  • The removable paper backing has curling at the edges.
  • The removable paper backing has some folding and bending of the edges.
  • CLEANED: No.
  • RESTORATION: No restoration.
  • MEASUREMENT VERIFIED: Yes.
  • There may also be something that we missed because we aren't specifically trained to see it.
  • We've not examined this microscopically.
  • We've not taken this apart or put this back together.
  • We've not subtracted anything nor added anything that was not already there.
  • We've not cleaned this.
  • The condition is good.
  • There's nothing functionally wrong with this.
