WHAT MAKES AN EXPERT AN EXPERT? SPREZZATURA & BAD POETRY
Your inquiries reveal that you haven't a clue
That a lifetime's required to do what we do.
You assume you can master in one easy free lesson
A lifetime of expertise from our profession.
Sprezzatura! It looks so simple when we do it
Everyone assumes there's nothing to it.
You think if you know all the marks and the brands
And the various names of the bottles and cans,
That's all you will ever need to make dough.
You're an overnight expert, a quick study pro.
Just buy a guidebook! It lists what's to discern.
What more could there ever possibly be to learn?
Can you walk a tightrope just by typing in “access”?
To not kill yourself requires fitness, study and practice.
Can you conduct an orchestra without learning the score?
Your guidebook says Sure! Music skill's not required anymore!
See how easy it is to know Van Gogh from Monet,
And you too can dance an entire ballet.
And this may be true! You just won't do it well.
But you won't notice the difference or be able to tell.
Learning by rote and learning by book
Never made a gourmet cook.
And not to be a hypocrite,
But art's best learned by doing it.
Since you've never tried them, you can't have forgotten
That French fries are different from potatoes au gratin.
So if all potatoes are the same to you,
Please stick with finding the murderers who
Left a trail of fingerprints on page two.
To really know is to be wise, and accurately judge the truth from lies.
You will reap what you have sown
By the quality of your thinking when you're all alone.
You can't learn the art of profound fine arts deduction
By watching a shallow American TV production.
Leave the serious jetté work to us pros;
We know far more than you can imagine when we dance on our toes.
