We accept returns for any reason. If you're not completely satisfied with your purchase, return it to us within fourteen (14) calendar days of receipt and we'll gladly exchange it, issue a credit, or refund your money, whichever you prefer. NO HASSLE. We don't sell on approval nor will we lower a price after the sale. Please don't hesitate to suggest an exchange if there is something else you would rather have.

We have thousands of items for sale. We know each and every item as well as we would like to know you. Your questions and comments are always welcome.

~ CUSTOMER SERVICE ~


For exchanges: There are no additional shipping charges to you for us to ship your exchange once we receive the item you'd like to exchange at our warehouse. Our guarantee is designed to minimize your risk of buying online, and we do accept returns on our merchandise for any reason within fourteen (14) calendar days of receipt, however, if you wish to make a return, please follow ALL the steps below because we are unable to accept returns otherwise. Custom-made items are not returnable. All sales are final after 30 days.

For exchange and return authorizations: Contact customer service by emailing us within 72 hours of receipt with the intent to return your package within fourteen (14) calendar days of receipt. Upon receipt of your returned item at our warehouse, we email you a confirmation of receipt to let you know that we are processing your return. You must email our customer service department and tell us you intend to return the merchandise before you return it. If you return your item but do not contact us first, and confirm the return with us, we will refuse the package and we won't issue you a refund. This also means that if ship the package on your own without our return authorization, we will refuse it, and we won't issue you a refund.  

Sorry, shipping fees are not refundable. Should you return an item for refund rather than an exchange, we will issue a prompt refund for the full price less 20% restocking fee to cover our costs for the shipping expenses we incurred when initially shipping the item to you as free shipping.

Your credit or exchange is usually issued in the same manner the purchase was made. Please note that credits are not instantaneous.  If you paid by check, our accounting department will process the refund or exchange within two weeks. If you paid by other means, it can take 10 or more business days, not calendar days, for any credit or exchange to work its' way through the various credit systems, and to show in your account or appear on your statement. To exchange or return an item, package the item securely in its' original packaging, with all our identifying tags and labels attached, and any accompanying package inserts and paperwork. Insure the package for full replacement value. Items must be received in the same condition as when sold, with all accompanying paperwork, tags, labels, and any paper enclosure. Enclose a note with your name, address, and phone number, or alternatively a copy of the invoice, and a note detailing what action you’d like us to take once the return is received in our warehouse. If there is any payment due as a result of the difference between the items, please enclose the additional fee with your exchange order.

If your package arrives damaged, please save the original packaging and email us for replacement arrangements and to file a claim with the carrier on your behalf. Questions? Email us.

If your item is damaged or doesn't work, and there is a manufacturer's warranty accompanying the item, please follow the information on the package inset that is packed with the item so you don't inadvertently void your warranty. One of the deciding factors we use in choosing our warranty workers, and support replacement manufacturers, is that they service our customers; please let us know if they need more information from us to do your warranty work, i.e., a copy of your invoice.

We reserve the right to charge a 20% restocking fee in the event a returned item is not in the same condition as when sold, is not in resalable condition, or was abused, or misused. Custom-made items are not returnable. All sales are final after 30 days. Questions? Email us.

~ PACKING & SHIPPING ~

We're careful to pack all our items with sufficient protection to prevent damage. We'll be sure your item is appropriately packed.


We ship the same or next business day unless your order is oversized and/or requires extensive packing, in which case we will inform you via email at the time of purchase with an expected ship date. Questions? Email us.

If you made multiple purchases from us, remember, shipments sent on the same day, at the same time, may arrive on different days at different times. For orders shipping to the lower 48 USA, to expedite your merchandise to you as soon as possible, we may ship partial orders unless otherwise specified. You will not pay any additional shipping fee when the balance of your order is shipped. For all other shipping destinations, it’s not cost effective to ship a partial shipment. Questions? Email us.

For tracking, there may be a slight delay as we are on a 12-mile island; add 24 hours to any online shipping tracking estimate you see anywhere. Allow ten (10) business days, not calendar days, for your package to arrive, even if tracking online says otherwise. We ship when we say we do but packages shipped to the lower 48 USA can take two (2) weeks to arrive from here, or may arrive sooner. International packages can take four (4) weeks or longer, plus it usually takes 1-2 days to clear customs;  however, international shipments can take even longer that this to arrive during certain peak traffic times of the year. Exclude any weekends and holidays. Business days aren't Calendar days.

We are unable to ship overnight, via Red Label, or via overnight express; USPS, UPS and FedEx will NOT guarantee these services from our island.

Our US prices include shipping to the lower-48 USA states ONLY, via USPS Priority ONLY, on the same or next business day, unless your order is oversized, complex, and/or requires extensive packing.  Elsewhere, shipping is via USPS Express only, with a flat additional charge of 30% of the order total, in addition to the total.  

Shipping charges include shipping and processing your orders and payments in the good ol' USA, receiving and storing goods at our island warehouses, processing returns, packing and delivering our products in a manner that assures a safe, secure, and timely delivery of your order, and replacing any goods that are lost or damaged in transit. This also includes fair wages for our shipping employees that process your order. Shipping charges are based upon average order weights, similar to other catalogers with like products, and are non-refundable. We know you loathe to pay them, but we've only raised our prices reluctantly to include them TWICE in the last 20 years. Think of all the time, gas and travel hassle you save by shopping via mail order!

~ WHAT IF I NEED THIS FAST, i.e. YESTERDAY? ~

Contact us. We may be able to expedite your order for an additional charge, calculated at the time of sale, so long as the order is placed no later than 10:00 AM Eastern Standard Time. Expedited requests made after 10:00 AM Eastern Standard Time must ship the next business day (not calendar day). Expedited services are limited from our tiny island. There is NO OVERNIGHT SERVICE however we can ship via USPS Express and USPS 2nd Day Air but only to the lower 48 USA states. We are unable to ship overnight, via Red Label, or via overnight express; USPS, UPS and FedEx will NOT guarantee these services from our island

We accept most major forms of US currency, including but not limited to MasterCard, Visa, American Express, checks drawn on US Banks, and United States Postal Service money orders (no other form of money order is accepted). Checks drawn on US Banks can take up to three weeks to clear and must clear before items ship. All orders are held for payments to clear and for credit card authorization. If you use PayPal to pay us, our credit card agreements for domestic and international orders ONLY permit us to SHIP TO YOUR PAYPAL CONFIRMED BILLING ADDRESS. If you place an international order on-line with a different non-USA "ship to" address, our system will automatically make the "ship to" address match the "bill to" address when we process it, without further notification from us.

~ PROVIDE YOUR CORRECT CURRENT EMAIL & SHIPPING ADDRESS ~

Why do you need to provide your correct current email address and correct current street shipping address? The email address you provide is **only** used to send you an email confirmation with your order details, along with an email containing tracking information once your order has shipped. In some cases, we will email a customer if there is a problem with their order (e.g., problem with delivery, item suddenly becomes back-ordered, etc.). Please be sure we are on your email 'white list' so you can receive emails from us. We must have all your correct information in order to ship to you: your full name and full complete shipping address (including your state, country and zip code), your item number, your item description, and your correct current email address. Include the above information with your payment or we cannot ship to you because we cannot guarantee you will receive what we ship. If you use a credit card or debit card to pay us, our credit card agreements for domestic and international orders ONLY permit us to ship to your confirmed credit card billing address; this is the address where the credit card company sends your bills.

If a package is undeliverable and returned to us, we will notify you and ask for instructions. If it was undeliverable for any reason other than an error on our part, we will request additional shipping charges to cover reshipping. It is your responsibility to provide corrected information and to pay the additional charges promptly. If we cannot reship your item to you, we will assess reasonable storage charges, and eventually liquidate your item to compensate us for these charges.

We incur, and must charge, shipping fees a second time whenever we have to reship or redirect packages for any reason, including but not limited to incorrect addresses and zip codes, or missing company names and suite numbers. In the event that we receive a refused package, we will notify you and ask for instructions, and you will be charged the return shipping fee. Please double check your shipping address to avoid additional shipping charges!

If a domestic or international order is refused for any reason other than an error on our part, shipping fees are NOT REFUNDABLE; the merchandise price less a 20% restocking fee will be refunded to the account only when the merchandise is received back in our warehouse. All refused orders are subject to this 20% restocking fee.

Deliveries to PO Boxes, military, AK, HI, USA territories must ship USPS Priority Mail.  We will contact you if there's any additional shipping fees due as a result of the weight of your package, or additional requirements due as a result of the package's contents. REMEMBER that military addresses are subject to clearing customs and have other delivery restrictions.

Many domestic orders are oversized, however, and far too big to fit into a mailbox. We realize it's tedious and a genuine pain in the neck to get to the Post Office to redeem that little yellow slip of paper they leave behind. We're on a 12-mile island and we do understand inconvenience. If you use PayPal to pay, and your confirmed PayPal address is a P.O. Box, and your order is shipping within the lower 48 USA and is oversized, please don't be offended if we decide to request your physical address as well as your PO Box. We're just thinking of your convenience and cost effectiveness when we ship.

Orders are held for payments to clear and for credit card authorization. Please take this into consideration during high traffic busy seasons.

~ OVERSEAS ORDERS ~

Prices and shipping fees do not include import duties, VAT or tariffs; these are the responsibility of the recipient and are usually collected upon delivery. We ship international packages so that you receive the maximum duty free exemption possible.

Based upon our considerable experience, we gladly ship to Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. These are currently THE ONLY COUNTRIES to which we can safely ship. This list may change at any time without notice at our discretion due to an increase in insurance claims and fraudulent credit card transactions, or changes in USA and other country's trade restrictions, policies, or import practices.

If you beg and plead, we still will not ship to the following countries due to high fraud histories: Austria, Australia, Belarus, Canada, China, Columbia, Egypt, Great Britain, Iceland, Indonesia, India, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Romania, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, anywhere in Asia, or anywhere else. If you insist, we still will not ship to the following areas with unreliable postal service: Eastern Europe, Latin America, Mexico, South America, Africa including the Middle East, Israel, and unfortunately, Italy, and Greece. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.

Do you know the joke about Take Home Exams? When it's a Take Home Exam; don't bring it back! Likewise, one-of-a-kind items shouldn't come back; they don't take kindly to travel and should be final sales. Ask any questions before you buy.

We do our utmost to minimize your risk of buying online by providing extensive documentation. It's beyond our scope, unfortunately, to educate the public on precisely what to look for when purchasing online one of a kind items, art, and antiques. However excellent public media may be, it's unrealistic to expect to acquire professional expertise solely via media such as Antiques Roadshow or collectibles guide books. Genuine expertise involves far more than what's apparent on the surface to a novice. Amateurs cannot know what they don't know. 

Even with our not inconsiderable experience, we may occasionally miss something because we are not trained to see it.  One of the profound facts our work has taught us is that none of us will see a thing if we are not already expecting to see it, even when it's directly in front of us. If you want to learn more about why this is so, then check out the Wall Street Journal articles and books by Dan Ariely and research submarine periscope accidents. 

Research who we are, and what we do. View all photographs very carefully, preferably on different systems. Read item listings carefully, several times, at different times of the day, with friends. Pay attention, and ask questions.

Even for the best experts, the dating and identification of art and antiques is difficult. The process requires extensive professional experience and expertise. We aren't just guessing when we describe our items. The dating and identification of art and antiques is not an exact science, nor for that matter is carbon dating. It isn't possible to be 100% certain. As a result, discrepancies exist amongst professional opinions and conclusions. Our summaries and detailed statements are given as a courtesy; they're our professional opinion, and should not be confused with a statement of facts.

Most of our "one of a kind" items have previous histories. Many were laboriously created by hand, have passed through a number of generations of hands, and finally, typically after decades or even centuries of display or storage or use, they found their way into our hands.  Unlike most "used" items whose condition is typically "works" or "doesn't work," our items run the gamut from pristine to damaged, repaired, chipped, faded, crinkled, folded, repainted, etc.  Sometimes, of course, damage is just damage, however most of our items are, ironically, more valuable precisely because of these apparent "defects" which tend to bear witness to their authenticity.   

We do our utmost to minimize your risk of buying online by providing extensive documentation on each item's page, including, but not limited to, specifically pointing out by word and photograph anything we, in our professional opinion, consider unusual or untoward. We cannot take photomicrographs of every square millimetre of every item. Please read each item's description thoroughly, and scrutinize all the photographs as carefully as you can.  We are careful to document each item with an eye toward customer questions, and you would be surprised at how many questions we get that have actually been answered in so many words in the listings.  Perhaps yours has been. 

With literally thousands of diverse things for sale, we have to prioritize inquiries, especially those that require significant research time, and most especially, those that ask extremely detailed questions about very inexpensive things.  If you're considering a substantial purchase of an expensive and fragile item, it is in our mutual interest to get it right the first time, and we will spare no effort to make you comfortable with any additional information we can provide.  On the other hand, do you really need an essay about a $20 postcard or $50 general merchandise catalog?  As much as we would like to wax lyrical about the photography technique used on a 1920's Riviera shoreline or discuss old swimsuit fashions, we need the time to add items to our stores and maybe even sleep and eat.  Considering the low cost and our guarantee, is it really worth the agony of extensive consideration and correspondence?  Buy it - you'll like it!  And if you really don't, you can exchange it or return it. For general questions not specific to items we're selling, please try to research your question on the web.  It's beyond our scope, unfortunately, to provide tutorials beyond the FAQs on this site.  We do try to add general information to this site as time allows, but sadly it rarely does. 

All the information you need to decide about a purchase is in front of you at the time of purchase. There are always more signs of age and usage and minutia than is appropriate to detail in older things. Our pieces are SOLD AS IS, Dans Son Jus. We provide you with all the information we can about each of our items in their listing descriptions, including but not limited to ample, excellent, highly detailed photos, so you can see, determine and verify the condition for yourself.

We guarantee our items to be exactly what we say they are. Our pieces are not sold "on approval" and we don't lower our prices after receipt.

The absence or omission of details in any description or condition statement does not imply that an item is in perfect condition, or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. We shall have no responsibility for any error or omission. All references and statements of material composition, time periods, culture, and interpretations of symbolic representations, are only our considered professional opinion, and they cannot be a guarantee of accuracy or authenticity, and should not be confused with a statement of facts.

Again, we're well aware that we can't teach you what to look for, and we also, in spite of our considerable expertise, may miss something we aren't specifically trained to see.  Even with all we do know, we don't know everything. We're still a little fuzzy about the beginning and end of the Universe, and that green stuff, also fuzzy, at the back of old refrigerators. We're human, and we do occasionally make mistakes. If you feel we've made an error or omission in one of our descriptions, we, and our customers, would appreciate it if you 'd point this out to us. We'll be happy to make a correction.  If you have questions, please read the listings carefully and look at all the photos carefully to see if your question is already answered. If your question is not answered in the listing, then by all means email us and we'll do our best to help. Doubts don't vanish after purchasing.

Our offices are located on Islesboro Island, a remote 12 mile long island off the midcoast of Maine. Should you or your agent wish to arrange for a viewing by appointment, please bear in mind that we're in an Ivory Tower situation. There are no common city amenities here, no such things as inns or hotels for overnight accommodations, and no gas stations, restaurants, or banks. Ferry reservations are often in short supply as their availability is limited. Please contact our office during business hours for assistance.

Force Majeure: Events outside our control, which are not reasonably foreseeable, shall be considered force majeure, meaning that under such circumstances, we are released from our obligations to fulfill contractual agreements. Example of such events are government action or omissions, new or amended legislation, conflict, embargo, fire, natural disasters, flood, sabotage, accident, war, strikes or lack of delivery from suppliers. The force majeure also includes government decisions that negatively affect the markets, products, and production, for example, restrictions, warnings, bans, recalls, strikes, etc.
